I'm a newbie to this site. I've dabbled in rootwork since I was a child. My family is largely mixed with the practice of Santeria & Hoodoo. It's not until now as an adult that I truly understand what it is they were doing.

I found out a few things about myself after speaking with a spiritual man a few days before my 26th birthday. The main thing is that I have a gift working with candles. This is something I have done all my life and had though nothing special of it. Now thinking back on everything I'm like wow he's right!
I have come here share what I know and hopefully learn more!

I saw this item on Catherine Yronwode's site and was wondering where this mojo hand can be historically be traced back to? Or is this a custom mojo hand that was created by Catherine Yronwode.

"Our Three Johns or Master Hand jack ball contains one each of the three roots known as "John" that are reputed to enhance all actions and activities -- High John the Conqueror Root, Low John (Little John to Chew) Root, and Southern John (Dixie John) Root. These are wound around the hair and name of the person for whom the ball is made. In addition, each jack ball also contains one piece of the famous Master Root (Ruler's Root), one piece of Sampson Snake Root, a piece of Lodestone, and a piece of Pyrite.

These are all articles that men and women reputedly use to strengthen their nature, to gain victory over enemies, to effectively rule and dominate friends and foes alike, and to protect themseleves from harm, and to gain money and love. There are no herbs in this hand, only the roots, minerals, hair, and name wound up inside the jack ball, which comes with a hanging string and is supplied with a red flannel carrying bag fixed with a Crown charm and a vial of Nature Oil. Directions for using the jack ball are included. "

Hey guys, I am preparing a course/workshop for my own local/geographic Pagan community on a fascet of Witchcraft that is very near-and-dear to me, as a Witch: Potion-Crafting! My impetus, of course, is because it seems like a relatively "dying" Art amid contemporary Witches, as though they could somehow care less! I certainly don't note any Witches admitting to brewing their own potions; rather, they rely on another's formula, as if it's better than anything they could ever formulate! ("Bullocks," I say!) Hell, some so-called "Witches" have absolutely no desire to brew any Potions, while others seem to bastardize the important epithet of "Witch" by differentiating between the Witch that employs Magick, and those that do not: More and more I meet so-called "Witches" who have no problem employing this descriptor, but...they reject Magick, and state, "I'm not that kind of 'Witch'"! WTF?!

Anyhoo...I was hoping to create an open dialogue between myself and any Witches/Pagans that have either taught, or attended, any classes and workshops specifically on the crafting of Potions. I'd like to know what was taught, or what assignments tendered, etc. While I have several ideas for my own lesson plans and syllibus, I don't want to short-change my students in any way, and want to ensure that my course be as exhaustive as possible, and that I not accidentally forget to cover anything. Ya' know what I mean? (I'm very exhaustive whenever I write and research something. ) Although, one concern of mine, is not enough stove-space when brewig Potions during class... I was hoping to model it, in part, after my high school Home Ec. class and give various research assignments, etc., etc.

Now, I am aware that many teaching Pagans and Witches that are educators guard their knowledge anbd course-teachings jealously, I rather subscribe to the view that educators can learn from, and aid each other.

Although, speaking of Root Work, one facet I really want to investigate, hopefully at an ethnographic level, herbs and offerings, and other "correspondences" that are dedicated to the Lwa/Orishas. For example, I keep hearing that bail and cardamom seds is dedicated to Erzulie-Freda, but not why. Now, if I state that sandalwood is associated with ganesha, and someone were to ask me why, I would point them to the appropriate academic or source material after saying that it was his mother, Parvati, who first formed the god from sandalwood paste.

All my best,

I wanted to describe an amazing thing that happened and I would welcome any comments anyone has.

I went to a yerberia this Saturday and bought an opening the roads candle and a jinx-removing candle, plus decrossing oil. This because everything I do seems to get blocked: everyone is so keen to have me work with them, but then nothing happens, etc.

On Sunday (before I did anything with the candles) I went on a hike and on the crossroads of the paths between the parking lot and the continuation of the track stood a man. He seemed a little crazed and said something odd, but I have a liking for a crazy and so I listened and I asked him how he came by his knowledge. When he finished, he said, "I should shake your hand" and held out his left hand.
I gave him my left hand and he took it in both of his and shook it and then he said, "Now you're cured."
I said, "Thank you so much, I appreciate it" and smiled, and went on my way.

Last night I oiled the candles and prayed to the ancestors and spirits, and saged my self and lit them in my sink with water.

This morning I put them on my altar and this afternoon, faster than I would have thought possible, I found that the people I interviewed with 8 weeks ago called all my references today. I also got a lead on another job, applied for a third one, and my tax person called me to tell me we could get a rebate!

I'm amazed at this speed and convinced the meeting at the crossroads was a spirit encounter.

My husband and I applied for renting a new apartment. It is a beautiful space, much larger than our current dark "cave", with lots of light and a balcony. The apartment building belongs to a big company that requires, among other things, various financial documents showing that we make three times the rent. We barely hang in their financial zone to qualify for the apartment + had other issues like a mean apartment manager and an insane landlord (one of the reasons we wanted to move out of where we live now) who needed to be contacted to see what kind of tenants we are. Without getting into too many details, the situation didn't look too promising.

But there's much to do if you have the hoodoo!!!

We planted a petition paper around the rental sign by the entrance to the building we want to move to from where we collected some dirt, dressed the applications with crown of success powder, and prayed to St. Joseph over several candles loaded with our personal concerns and planted firmly in the building's dirt. The next day we went to the rental office and submitted our paperwork with our fingers crossed and filled with crown of success powder.

They called us back withing two and a half hours to let us know we got the apartment!

Now I, along with the entire world has seen the madness unfold as Brittany went from Americas sweetheart to the hot bubbling mess she has now become.... Noticed that since Brittany got with Kevin that her life just went down shit creek... this is what was hypothesized....

But first let's backtrack......Remember the situation with Kevin when he first met Brit?... He had Shar at home... a VERY pregnant Shar at home who was expecting him back... 'cept he forgot where he lived and stayed at Britanny's instead...

Well... being opportunistic.. and grimy... he decided to stay with Brittany and she took him... On her end I'm guessing she stayed with him out of naivete and ..of course.. love... but wrong is wrong and eventually peter will have to pay the piper.... as we are seeing now...

Inevitably, Shar found out, and I know it hit like a mac truck on 'roids cuz she trusted, loved and had an established life with him, they even have children together.... hmmph...and just like that... threw it all away for the next chic...

Could you just imagine the anger and pain that Shar felt... the feelings that come into play when you're burnt and heartbroken. Hear me tell it... I'd rather be caught inna hurricane than go through that. My friend says that being hurt and angry... Shar could've put the root to get back at them. After all it is really fucked up to leave your pregnant woman like that... and as for Brittany... being a woman why would you take a man like that...

So do you think that Shar put the root on brit and Kev... or is it Karma.... the only thing I'm a little perplexed about is ... if it was done... why do we always go after the other woman while the man is unscathed... should'nt Kevin get his too.

If I focus love & luck spells work pretty much the way I want them too, with a few occasional surprises. I've been able to send people away without much difficulty. But I lose interest for years at a time, until I need something.

I had a seriously BAD childhood (gonna get a little graphic here, sorry, no other way to tell it). Little by little the people who made it bad are dying in the most intense ways. And they're unrelated.

An uncle who I hated was fed ground glass by a co-worked. It took him 8 months to die while his organ all went ganggreen (sp?) one at a time. 8 months of pain and suffering. He raped be regularly for 8 months when I was 11. Haven't spoken to him or my aunt in decades. I once wished with all of my heart that he would die a horrible painful death.

A step mother who was the archetype of evil stepmom. I also wanted to see her suffer. She died of brain cancer. Took two long years. She suffered.

Very recently, another relative died. He was responsible for sending me to a really abusive foster home where I lived for several years. He died of old age. Doesn't sound bad does it? It was discovered after his death that his caretaker was physically abusive for many years.

There are more stories like this. I haven't focused any energy on these people but they die almost exactly as I wished they would when I was young. Am I somehow doing this?

Betty is doing two things; 1 trying to convince Karen to do something that could really damage her reputation (her reputation is important to her in her field) and 2 she's spreading rumors about Karen that are simply untrue. Karen knows about some of these rumors and again she just brushes it off as unimportant.

I'm looking for some sort of spell that will simply open Karen's eyes before this goes too far. I thought of doing some spells to just make Betty go away, I've had some luck with those in the past, but I think she can inflict this damage even from afar. If Karen could see Betty, and what she's up to, clearly she would put an end to it. Any words of wisdom?
So...I was wondering if anyone, here, might know of a supplier that's sells Copal Oil (if not some sort of liquid copal-based botanical!). I really don't want to use Frankincense as a substitute, because the energies would be entirely different for these purposes, given that copal is employed in Mexico as an apotropaic substance, particularly when fighting Witchcraft.

Has anyone experiences with the oils of Lucky Mojo Curio?

Today I have received a delivery with herbs and oils of LMC - that I ordered at 13 Moons!
Well, that Venus oil has absolutely no fragrance, it smells only the oily base, and the Blessing oil has only a sharp unpleasant(!) smell of lemongrass and nothing further.
I have the presumption that the oils are already very old, because the bottles are covered with old sticky dust.
Perhaps the oils are already so old that have lost their fragrances?

A master root is already half pulverizes because they erode insects.
The Spirit Guide oil (LMC) somehow smells like glue, but perhaps it should be?
Therefore, I would like to know if everything is correct.

I have paid a lot of money for the delivery and now I am very annoyed about the quality of the goods.
Why these oils smell so bad? I simply do not believe that Cat Yronwode designed sooo... bad oils!
What ingredients used for Blessing and Spirit Guide oils in traditional hoodoo?

For your answers, I would be very grateful.

When others comment about it, they will laugh it off as - its just our family superstitions. So, I managed to learn as much as I could when I was young.
I came across "money drawing oil lamp" on the internet. However, when I clicked on the link, it was an error page.

Could anyone explain to me what it is all about and how do I work with oil lamps?
Albeit, they are found within The [Greater] Key of Solomon, where do these attributations come from? While some of them are very common-sense; others are not! For example, copper oxide is green and when copper is exposed to fire that flame will burn green; Aphrodite even had a famous Temple on Cypress (from a Greek term for copper) which was famous for its copper mines. But, what about some other associations in this list: Jupiter, Thursday, Tin and the colour Blue? How did an attributation such as this come about in the minds of Alchemists? From whence did it evolve? Though, one wonders if there's something *more* to the attributations between Red, Tuesday, Mars and Iron; and Green, Friday, Venus and Copper?

Croetia, Slovekia, Hungary]? I tell ya', researching Greek, Roman, Celtic and Egyptian deities is *so* much more simple! After all, I could rattle off a variety of contemporary scholars for each discipline. As an example, for Celtic (which is my specialty) I would most likely recommend James Mackillop, Miranda Green, and (my favorite) Prof. Daithi O hOgain. But, presently, I am researching Horned Gods and their respective, or generative, cults within their endemic culture. I hear that one Slavic Horned God is named Velos or Volos, but I can learn nothing about Him hrough any of *my* books, or Slavic mythology for that matter. Hmmm...I wonder if there is a Lithuanian Horned God? Or any Hearth-Goddesses and Cults throughout eastern Europe (I already known of Gabija/Gabieta, however)?

I am also curious whether or not there happens to be American-influenced Santeria or Voodoo/Hoodoo herb-lore surrounding this plant as well. Extra browny points for anyone that sites their sources (the more reputible the better!). :o) Thanks!

Hey guys, here's something of an "odd" question:

I was wondering if anyone has any advice for designinf labels (as in software, perhaps) for my jars of herbs? I was thinking of a nice, ornate, boarder for each label, with the "common name" and "botanical name" written in a lovely font, with images of the the plant, itself, asthetically placed around the words-- such as leaves, flower tops, roots, trees, seeds, etc. But, these images will ne somewhat "faded", or "lightened" for asthetic purposes. Anyone got any ideas of advice? I can "see" what I want to accomplish, but it's all a matter of finding what is required to "manifest" those results. Ya' know what I mean? ;o) The reason why I ask is because I've found some lovely bottles, and I think I should extend more "loveliness" to their labels, as well...

Hey guys, now...I've somehow screwed up my right-shouldar and upper arm as I slept last week, so I'm in a lot of pain (especially when typing), so I'll try and keep this brief. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone is familiar with Gods and Goddesses especially associated with employment? I ask because I've squirrelled away some money in order to create a potion and spell to these ends-- I'm simply sick of being unemployed! But, for the last two years, I simply lost the Will to even continue looking, due to the unyielding rejection I kept recieving (especially when that damned three-tiered interview-process makes it so inconvenient!). Hel, one large company wouldn't give me a chance due to an instance of miscommunication [the denotation I was taught in college, that signified an "open ended question", was not what she viewed as an "open ended question"; and she could not give me a second chance nor did she bother to explain her connotation at the onset]; another large company I applied to wouldn't give me a chance because I was not "hot" enough-- the guy I would have been replacing, the "face" of the Co. when you walk into the front door, could have been an underware model[!]; while, I have also encountered a sexist stigma that closes many doors to me-- receptionist or desk-type "jobs" are viewed as "women's work", while, for men, unless you have some sort of degree in business or computers, etc. you are relegated to the most harsh and physically demanding jobs. Jeeze, I couldn't even get Target to hire me to work on the floor! So, because of my experiences, I had fallen into absolute despair for a long time (almost 2 years, in fact)! It was this that lead me to think that maybe I have been cosmically black-balled-- after all, I couldn't even get a job when I was applying all across town during and shortly after college (and this was a college-town). And, that thought constantly eats away at my resolve. What's worse is when the hiring managers look at you with a blank, careless expression, as if they've never been without a job a day in their lives! I've even had my lack of experience with a certain form of software held against me, despite the fact that knowledge in it was not requested in the initial advertisement (nor would it have been hard to learn on the job!)-- they just blind-sided me, that way. (Okay Wade, catch a breath....)

Anyway, some of the thoughts I jotted down this morning were:

* Mysore sandalwood oil [I seem to recall that Ganesha-- to whom this is sacred-- is regarded as a God of the lower class people and their prosperity or employment]
* Bay (Laurel) oil [For "winning" or "out shining" the others, because this it what was used to crown the winners of the ancient Olympic Games]
* pinch of sea salt [our word "salary" comes from a Roman expression for salt; and salt was once extensively used as a foprm of currancy, particularly by the Celts at the Halstatt region]
* Venusian, Mercurial, and Solar influences [the latter for the "All Seing" attribute of the Sun, 'cause I happen to believe that the Gods almost certainly can see what I cannot; hence, They may be able to find a job that I would be entirely unaware of-- as a result, I was seriously thinking about using a yellow candle in the spell]. And, perhaps something small relating the the Earth for pragmatism, oir something also for success.
* Tonka Bean oil [??? Just a random thought, because I hear it's unparalleled in drawing prosperity and wealth...and it's supposed to smell a bit like honey!]
* Bayberry [of course, there's an old addage that, "A bayberry candle burnt down to the socket puts plenty of money in the pocket!"]

Oh, it looks like I almost forgot to interject the statement about what role researching Gods and Goddesses of Employment might play in the Employment Potion I want to make. Well, I would like to discern what fragrant herbs and oils were (and are) dedicated to Them, and if these same substances can be said to draw wealth and prosperity, good fortune, and particularly employment! ;o)

Y'know, thinking about this topic, I have never seen any Witch devulge a list of what they deem to be, in their experience, the best herbs and EOs for gleaning employment-- and why! (Hey, "Why?" is my favourite question!) This seems to be an aspect of Magick often over-looked in modern Pagan literature...

Take Care,

Hey guys, I decided to put my relatively brand new scanner to some practical use (ain't technology grand?) and thought I'd post some images of various ritual candle seals designed by Lady Rhea from Magickal Realms in the Bronx. I was hoping that someone here might be able to aid me in "deciphering" the motivs and symbolism within each talisman, if you are able. Now, the reason I ask is because many of these seals seem to draw extensively upon veve leitmotivs, remembering that Lady Rhea is, apparently, highly trained in the magico-religious systems of Voodoo and Santeria.

Of the motivs of interest to me in better understanding her talismanic seals are generally as follows:

* The alongated, crossing, lines as in Seal #5: Boys Night Out. If I recall correctly (I quite easily may be wrong!)-- perhaps from "Voodoo in Haiti", without checking with my personal Library-- within the context of veves this symbolizes iron gates, especially in conjunction with terminating curly-qs or "filigrees". Though, perhaps this is not what was meant at all! Either way, with regard to a Gay Male Love Spell, what is the significance of the motif, especially in conjunction with the asteriks (*), or "stars"?
* It has been suggested that the asterik-motivs (*) in veves are noted ritual candle-placements. So, I must wonder (not knowing any great deal about veves and from where their leitmotivs have stemmed) if there is any implication regarding this "placement" of asteriks ("candles"?) with love or some other form of meaning/"conditions", orishas, or themes from folk-tradition, etc.
* Within Lady Rhea's talismanic seals dealing primarily with love matters (though it also appears in her candle speal for "Peace & Protection") I often note the mirrored "Z" motivs. At first thought-- from the perspective of a Witch-- I thought it might represent the symbol for the "perfect couple" found upon the hilt of the Athame; but, if this were so, it would have to be a connected "stair-step" motif. So...anyone know what this symbol probably represents, if they have seen it through Santeria or Hoodoo veves elsewhere?

(The other symbols in the Boys Night Out talisman are perfectly recognizible, of course: the conjoined Marsian glyph, the invoication of balanced solar and lunar energies, with the symbol for "infinity"-- there's a propper term for this, but it escapes me right now.)

* In the Love Uncrossing talisman one notes the appearance of swirl-motivs, as well as terminating filigrees. Now, if "Voodoo In Haiti" is correct, lines terminating with these ornimentation evolved from European iron-gate motivs. So, then, why make use of it? (The iron gate explination does not seem like a posibility here; nor when applied to all veves with filigrees of Rhea's talismans, such as a house-motif.) Or, is there, maybe, something else implied here from Santeria or Voodoo/Hoodoo? And, what of the cross-hatching scroll-work that is frequent in veves and Rhea's talismans? What do they symbolize?
* Another relatively common motiv I have observed in veves, which Lady Rhea also employs, also occurs in the "Hypnotique" candle talisman: it's the sharply-angled cross-bar which seems to recall, to my mind, the "image" of a weather vane. But, what is really implied here, within the context of the systems onto which she is drawing? Again, this talisman also contains the asteric leitmotiv...

Thanks a heap!
With that in mind, I thought we could offer to collect some to mail to each other. The idea is we post what we need and/or what we can get and hopefully somebody can help us out.

At this point I'm in desperate need of graveyard dirt from a poet's grave. Most any poet of repute will do. If you live in or near Aspen, CO, there's one in particular there that would be especially perfect. If you're in NYC, there are also a number of good poets resting there.

As for what I can offer, I live in Alabama and can help out with needs here. I also live just a few hours from New Orleans and I'm planning a trip there soon, so I'm planning to collect there, especially near Marie Laveau's tomb (with, of course, a big offering of whiskey!).

So if you can help out or if you have anything else to offer or that you'd like, join the thread!

Uses of Ritual Ointments?

Hey guys, I've only recently begun making ritual ointments or salves (my primary focus, until now, has been medicinal uses!). So, because very little information seems to be published re: their practical ritual uses, aside from self-anointment, I was wondering how anyone here might suggest different ways that Ritual/Magickal Ointments/Salves might be used, rather than simply personal anointment?

Here are four that have readily occured to me:

* Anointing one's Altar or other sacred objects, much like one would use a wood polish in an effort to polish it!
* Anointing, or "pollishing", one's ritual wand prior to a very specific ritual or spell. Eg., "buffing" it with a money ointment prior to using the wand in a Money Spell, for example, in casting the Circle or directing one's raised energy, etc.
* Using it to anoint one's rtual or Altar candles, as one might use a ritual oil.
* Rites de Passage

Just thought I'd start a topic for discussion.
I'm having a concern and I'm looking for some advice. Any would be greatly appreciated.

I moved and attempted to transfer my license. I wrote the DMV and discovered that it been suspended due to back taxes and an outstanding out-of-state ticket. The taxes and the ticket have both been paid-in-full as of January.

I have, since February, been sending multiple copies of the proof that everything has been paid to the DMV. These letters were sent via certified mail. I even started mailed myself copies of what I forwarded that I wouldn't open so they would stay sealed as proof of when I sent it. The division of the DMV, I have to deal with is only accessible via mail. Not by phone, not in-person.

I went back to visit last month and did an offering to St. Expedite a week ahead which co-incided to another mailing of documents to remedy the situation b/c I wanted to be able to rent a car whilst I was there. My petition did not work and my license remains suspended.

So, I called the DMV today and there have been no changes. My next step I guess would be to contact that state's Attorney General's office. In concert I want do another working. I'm thinking some honey jars and a Just Judge candle.
Having begun quite a collection of cat's oils, I have some questions about them that you may be able to help me out with.

Are they all skin-safe? I know some oils from other suppliers either contain ingredients like metal that shouldn't be worn on the skin, and some just contain stuff you could wear but would never ever want to smell like.

On a similar note, are certain oils more designed to be worn and certain designed more for anointing? One of my favorite suppliers tends to make distinctions, but that could just be a cya for folks with sensitive skin. I do realize that oils can be used in lots of ways, but I like to know how the alchemist intended use during the crafting.

************************************************************

Hello,

I have never sent email to my customer database before, and i am not doing so now in an attempt to make you order products, but something has come up that i think all of our loyal and long-time Lucky Mojo customers should know about.

A television series is offering $50,000 to the right African-American hoodoo-using family. No kidding! This is a serious offer. Here is the deal:

Today i received a call from the casting director for a TV show asking for my help in locating the following:

An African American family that practices hoodoo, with two parents and at least one child in the home aged 6 to 18 -- who would be willing to perform on-camera such common and typical practices as house blessing/cleansing, taking cleansing baths or foot washings (no nudity), fixing food with herbs and/or personal concerns, praying the Psalms, making an altar and setting lights, discussing dream interpretations, dressing money for prosperity, making a mojo hand, visiting a graveyard and collecting graveyard dirt, disposing of items at a crossroads, etc. The TV show is a "feel-good, upbeat, family-values" reality-type show and the family would be filmed for seven days -- and receive $50,000 in compensation.

Neither adult member of the family need be a professional reader or rootworker who works for clients, although that would be a distinct advantage -- but BOTH parents should be familiar with the kind of things that are done along these lines. Being members of a Spiritual Church would be a plus, or of any church where work is performed "in the spirit."

I was assured -- and i believe this to be true -- that the program, which tries to showcase real people with "varied lifestyles", will be respectful and inclusive about hoodoo practices, with no intent to mock or deride anyone. The security and safety of participants is assured. There are no stupid "challenges" or outrageous offenses to good taste in the program.

I was offered a $1,000 finder's fee for locating such a family who qualifies to appear on the show. I am not responsible for selecting participants. I will only be paid the finder's fee if a family whom i suggest is selected. Any finder's fee i am given will be donated to Missionary Independent Spiritual Church, for the printing of church literature.

I am prepared to submit as many names as i receive, in the hope that someone, either among my students or my regular customers, will be selected by the show's producers and will thus get the wonderful $50,000 fee paid to the family that appears on the show.

Please contact me AT ONCE at the Lucky Mojo Curio Co. shop -- 707-887-1521 -- if you think that your family might qualify. If i am not in, or am busy, please leave a message with your full name, phone number, and best time to call you back.

Remember: I am not holding an audition; i am simply passing along names and contact information on behalf of interested families. Any auditions resulting in the final selection of the family who will actually appear on the show will be conducted by the producers of the show. And again, to even be considered for this opportunity, your family should be African American, with two parents in the home, at least one
child aged 6-18 in the home, be sincere and knowledgeable practitioners of hoodoo, preferably working for clients and preferably members of a spiritual church -- and feel positive and upbeat about appearing in a nationally broadcast reality-type TV show.

This is not a joke.

Please, let's get the money into our community!

Thanks, folks.

Circle will be publishing me and Anna's article (a MS. entry) in the latest issue of their magazine: http://www.circlesanctuary.org/circle/ So, when you see a copy of this issue, pick it up, would you! The only change since submission (depending upon how they may have "Edited" it) is the introductory sentence in an effort to read MUCH more professionally and smoothly. I initially submitted it for their "Pantheon" section, but they wonderfully published it under their "Nature Religions Around the World"! I should be recieving my complimentary two copies of this issue within a fortnight-- just in time for my birthday: 14, March. Hmmm...I wonder when our local Borders will carry it? But, if you can't find it there, order it directly from Ciurcle Sanctuyary, or search about until you *do* find a copy! *G* Let me know what you think of it when you read it, please! Personally, I'm particularly excited to read Emma Wilby's contribution, "Shamanistic Visionary Traditions In Early Modern British Witchcraft"; in fact, I can't wait to read her academic book on the same topic (along the lines of Profs.

I've been collecting tricks to help communication. I thought I'd share some with you and see if anybody else has any to share.

If it's for a specific person, soak a name paper in a mixture of whiskey and tobacco. Wait three days and dab the mixture on your phone, computer, mailbox etc. (Since tobacco stains and whiskey stinks, I like to just soak a paper towel and put it in my laptop bag.)

Go outside, or stand by an open window or door. Hold a sprig of white sage (Salvia apiana) and speak to the spirit of the plant. Ask it to go to the person you wish to contact. Use their name to identify them, and visualize them, and if you know where they are, mention that too. Then light the sage, and hold it as it smokes.

Read the 92nd Psalm all the way through.
Read the 35th Psalm all the way through.
Read the 103rd Psalm all the way through.
Go back and read the 92nd Psalm again. This time, after each verse, call out the person's name. At the end of the Psalm, walk to an East-facing door or window. Open it a little and call the person's name nine times. Tell them that no matter where they are, no matter what they are doing, they will have no peace, no rest, no contentment or joy until they call you.

(Some of those, and more, came from <a href="http://www.hoodooroots.com/encourage.htm">Hoodoo Roots</a>.

I find it often helps open communication of all kinds just to massage my throat chakra, especially with oil that contains Mercurial ingredients.

And, of course, initiating contact is always a great spell, when possible.

Does anybody else have any to share?

I posted this to the hrcourse list yesterday, and I wanted to share it with y'all (I'm Marisa on the list, that's my real name):

We have a peony bush in our backyard that's in a terrible spot and really needs to be relocated (one of about eight zillion landscaping projects we need to address). Friday morning I was out clipping the one bloom we usually get off of it, pulling some weeds around it and generally tending to its needs. I had been reading in cat's Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic about the peony root, and wondered if I could get one. After some gentle digging and pulling, I was gifted with two small root pieces and one huge, intact root. I was so excited! I thanked the plant and buried a quarter next to it as an offering.

Who says Friday the 13th is unlucky? Not me!

I asked cat about oiling the root while it dries, and she told me to use olive or almond oil, and how to do it. Then she said something really great: "Working and rubbing the oil into the root shows it how much you care for it and gets it working for you." I LOVE that idea!!

In case you're not familiar with the peony's magical properties, cat says the roots and seeds are "said to have a great deal of power to protect against misfortune, bolster health, break jinxes, and draw good fortune." I feel blessed to have acquired some!

Have any of you ever worked with peony and gotten good results?

So, she really knows her stuff! On the other hand, however, I've ben burned by bad books before (despite the fact that my dear former friend has been at it since the 70s and really knows her stuff!), and have no way of knowing either what's in this book, or what it's about; even if it's a waste of money (which I don't have much of)!

* How do other religions across the globe anoint candles for ritual or Magick (though they would not call it such), like the Catholic Chuch as only one of MANY possible examples? For example, a good college friend of mine was speaking with a Telephone Psychic that advised her to cast a love spell by writing what she wanted in a man, finding a pink candle, anointing said "candle" with three crosses in oil, and then consigning said "request" to the flame. I'm currently investigating numerous (and hopefully exhaustive methods) through which candles are anointed for religious or ritual purposes. And, why such a method os preferred.

* Is there any documented evidence for Christian priests performing curses of some sort by using candle, or other form of ritual Magick? Just another facet of Magick I would like to investigate, given how steeped Catholocism is in ritual Magick, to whatever extent. ;o)

Anyway, I believe I've finally found out how they do it! Though, I'd like to contact such a supplier of incense to be *sure*! Be that as it may, I believe that coloured powdered incense is created by using a vegitable dye to colour talcum powder! Does anyone, perhaps, know more about this? Can you varify my thesis, or if not, direct me into a direction for answers, perhaps? How do these suppliers of New Age shops make such brightly coloured powdered-incense?

Hmmm...if I am right, how would one make a black base-powder in such a way? One would probably only get a very dark grey colour, even if a black colouring were used to "dye" the powder.

The reason I am searching this, is because I often seen coloured incenses in powdered form (as though essential oils, for example, were simple added to a coloured powder), but I have *NEVER* read of sucha technique in any incense-making book before. And, the authors of those books I've been able to contact haven't a clue, either. However, it's still chiefly practiced by many WItches and Hoodoo practitioners (and those few I have contacted have refused to explain how base-powders are made), and I would love to add this proceedure to my repertoire. ;o) Any ideas?

Hey guys, does anyone know of a supplier of bamba wood bases for incense? I've found a coloured dye-powder I could subsequently employ in giving that extra somethin'-somethin' that I'd like to experiment with, but I'll need something to add it to, first! ;o) Also, it'll have to be unscented (obviously). Anyone know of any? I was flipping through my copy of Slater's Formulary this afternoon, and he mentioned that coloured bamba wood bases were used to create coloured occult incenses. So...if this pans out, all I need to do is find an excellent supplier!!! :o) I hear that they already come coloured, but surely uncoloured bases are also available? Although, perhaps I would do well to stil with the coloured variety for now.

I've been practicing Wiccan magick for a few years and have incorporated some hoodoo elements into my practices. I mostly see a change in the way I think about the world in that I am both less binaristic and more animistic in my approaches to situations. But I'm not sure how else I could articulate any special thing or biggest change. I know doing magick has helped bring me certain opportunities though I'm not yet a millionaire fairy princess.

Hey guys, another question has come to mind, regarding something I would love to indepthly investigate so that I might create my own especial seals to carve in candles or use in ritual that are based off of Veves. So...can anyone recommend any hard-core "classic" texts upon them? I know that they frequently represent Voodoo Deities, but can one (traditionally-speaking) create thgeir own out of whole-cloth? And, if so, what goes into it? What symbols are used, and why? Or, are Veves always "written in stone", schematically or iconographically? Ugh...that is, would it be considered "tabu" to design one's own Veves? I would find this a valuable path when evbentually constructing and creating my own talismanic-spells, if you will, because I'd rather create something myself rather than use something from a book-- even if it may be "traditional".

I consider myself a very astute student of whatever I may be studying. ;o)

As an example of a curiousity that I have is: Many years ago I bought a copy of the underground candle Magick "classic" by Lady Rhea (the title escapes me right now, as it's downstairs). Anyway, I was wondering what many of the symbols in many of her candle seals refer to-- what's their purpose? So, when this book finally went mainstream a couple years back, under the title of "The Enchanted Candle: Crafting & Casting Magickal Light", I snagged a copy hoping she might explain it more. She didn't. *sigh*

Honestly, if I may vent a bit, I was always put off (to be kind about it) in that she did not give a single formula recipe for her early candle-spell book, despite that most of them may be found in Herman Slater's "Magickal Formulary"; as well as due to the fact that Enchantments Inc. sells them! That simply didn't sit well with me at all. Indeed, I was particularly interested in her formulas for Gay men (I wanted to discect 'em)! So, what actually prompted me to buy this book was the hope that she may have included some of these formulas that were not found in Slater's books.
