Hoodoo Herb Lore...

I was wondering if you know a great deal of the Hoodoo Magickal uses of herbs-- it seems to deeply influence modern Pagan Witchcraft, to an extent (especially for The Pagan Way and Witchcraft in New York City). I ask because I am deeply interested in studying Hoodoo herbal Magick; but not just their uses, but why they are Magickally used in such a way. For example: what lore surrounds molasses, clove oil and honeysukle oil that attribute it to compelling/commanding formulae? Or, why is powdered crab shell used to reverse curses cast at oneself? This is the sort of information I am looking for, rather than just "roses are used in love spells". So...to that end, I am personally interested in very "classic" or even early, as well as even ethnographic or folk-lore texts on the topic. Ya' know what I mean? ;o)

Honestly, I am deeply interested in herbs and other products traditionally used in cursing, commanding, power, and uncrossing, as well as why they are used for that putpose.

I believe it's an endemic form of Magick that should simply not be "white washed". Destruction is a part of the human condition, of reality itself, and as such is an endemic form of the "Authentic Initiation" cycle. However, this is not to say that one ought to walk around cocky, or proud, that they had toi resort to such methods. It's a serious business! Although, I also recognize that it can be healing, or cathartic, as well (which is always a bonus!).

Take Care,

I'm curious about this too. A lot of it has to do with offerings to the orisha(s) involved and the mythology surroundingthem. I think hoodoo, rather than Haitian or African voodoo/voudun, has less of an emphasis on focusing on the orisha as their own entitites and therefore may seem more arbitrary. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Yep, exactly right. Hoodoo is not a religion, but a system of magic. One can be of any religion or no religion and still practice it successfully. Historically, most rootworkers have been Christian. There are a lot of Native American and European influences in hoodoo, and lots of work with the Old Testament and especially the Psalms.

As far as exactly why certain herbs are used for certain purposes, that is something I'd love to know more about as well. Hoodoo has basically been an oral tradition (there is certainly more being written about it nowadays, of course), so a lot of the origins of the system have become obscured. There is something called the Doctrine of Signatures, meaning that God has placed Her/His "signature" in the visual appearance of certain plants, roots, herbs, etc., to indicate to the practitioner their intended (or at least possible) use. At any rate, it's a subject that certainly merits a lot of study!

Thanks for this! I've heard of the Doctrine of Signatures but wasn't quite sure what it was.

Another question for Marisa or anyone else who knows regarding the importance of the Psalms in hoodoo. Why are the psalms so important? Is it a matter of historically Christian practioners bringing forth the idea, or is there said to be magic in the words themselves? Or do we chant psalms as ways of raising energy?

This is the first I heard of Doctrine of Signatures...

I am a rootworker...I started out having never heard of rootwork, but mixed up spells in bottles since I was a wee babe.

Way I see it, Molasses is condensed sugar. What is more likely to bring love than sticky gooey sugar?

The crabshells...well, I work with the Orisha, and Yemaya is the mother of witches in one view. Also, have you ever picked crabs and gotten a splinter? THOSE things HURT! Why shouldn't that be a go-away mojo?

I don't use other folks' formulas...I just stick with what is around me, and what has meaning to me and the folks who ask me for help. *shrug*

    Enjoy your exploration...
